Building Toward Belonging: Michigan Medicine Implicit Bias Training (LARA Compliant) will serve as the foundation for a continuous curriculum to help us evolve into a more respectful and inclusive culture. This mandatory course educates our community about why inclusion matters, and helps us identify key allyship behaviors that reduce the influence of implicit bias in decision-making, and integrate strategies for mitigating bias in our daily work. It supports the BASE strategic priority of Belonging, and the Michigan Medicine strategic initiative of diversity, equity and inclusion.

All faculty, staff and learners within Michigan Medicine and Medical School must take this mandatory course. The format and timing requirements for taking the course is slightly different for clinical licensed employees, than for all other employees. LARA requires licensed staff to take an instructor-led course, either in person or via virtual meeting platforms, such as Zoom. New licensees are required to complete two hours of training while previously licensed faculty and staff are required to take one hour per year. All LARA-healthcare licensed faculty, staff and learners on any University of Michigan campus are welcome to participate in this training opportunity.

A new rule was added to the Public Health Code, which defines implicit bias as “an attitude or internalized stereotype that affects an individual’s perception, action, or decision making in an unconscious manner and often contributes to unequal treatment of people based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, age, disability, or other characteristic." Training on implicit bias is required as a condition for initial licensure or registration as well as license or registration renewal. This training is in addition to any continuing education training required for your profession and is required every time you renew your license.

Because there are 28 categories of licensed professionals who fall under this requirement, we cannot confirm who specifically is required to take the training but you can access that information in the LARA requirements. To the extent that any licensed healthcare professional is required to take the training as a part of their license issuance or renewal process, this training would be sufficient to fill that requirement.

All Michigan Medicine employees must complete one hour of the learning session by June 30, 2023. However, licensed staff may need to complete one hour of training before this date, depending on when their license expires. New licensees must complete two hours of the course before their license expires. The Implicit Bias series includes three one-hour modules, and employees are welcome to take all three. They can be taken individually or in its entirety at any time. Licensed clinicians must take three hours of implicit bias training over the span of three years.

All Michigan Medicine faculty, staff and students will need to take a 1 hour session. The learning will be offered in blocks of 1 hour sessions. Please note that new applicants for licensure are required to have completed 2 hours of implicit bias training and renewing licensees are required to complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. Yes, this is a new course designed to meet the LARA requirements and the Michigan Medicine strategic initiative of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Faculty and staff who must complete implicit bias training for immediate re-licensure, will always be eligible to attend any open session, even if otherwise considered full. To request an override to attend a full-capacity course, email [email protected](link sends e-mail) at least 48 hours in advance of the session you wish to attend. As a reminder, new licensees are required to complete two hours of training while previously licensed faculty and staff are only required to take one hour per year.

This fee-based, 1-hour training meets the State of Michigan LARA implicit bias requirements. The majority of this training will be instructor-led and primarily offered virtually. Groups or units of 50 or more can request a private or specially scheduled session via zoom or in-person. LARA requires an instructor-led course, either in person or via virtual meeting platforms, such as Zoom.

All completion records can be found in the Training and Education Unified Dashboard.  This Tableau dashboard will be accessible to all leaders beginning Fall 2022.  More communication regarding how to access the dashboard and find the completion records will come prior to the launch of this dashboard. 

We are no longer accepting Unit Sessions requests for this course.  There are many options for open sessions of the course available through June 2023.  Individuals can sign up for one of these sessions by visiting the course registration page on the MY LINC site . If you are interested in your colleagues all signing up for the same session, our team may be able to assist you based on availability of open seats.  Please contact [email protected] to explore this option further.  

Before you submit a request for a unit session, please consider utilizing one of our scheduled Michigan Medicine Open Sessions. If there is a session you would like your team to attend you can either: (1) inform them which session to register for, or (2) send an excel sheet of all expected participants (including first name, last name, and uniqname) to [email protected] and the specific session you would like the list registered for and a member of our team will register them.

If your Michigan Medicine team is unable to attend an Open Session, and you are interested in scheduling a session for your unit, please submit a Unit Request Form. At this time we cannot accept unit requests from University of Michigan teams that are not a part of Michigan Medicine or do not require the training for licensure. The unit request can include participants who require the course for licensure as well as other members of your team who do not have a licensing requirement, but still need to fulfill the one-hour organization-wide requirement. Once the unit request form is received, the request will be assessed for feasibility and you will receive information on the scheduling process.  Please submit your request 5-6 weeks in advance to the date you are requesting.

When completing this form, please choose:

• "A facilitator/presenter for an event or a DEI Course presented at my unit" from the "What are you interested in?" drop down menu, and

Due to the high demand for this course and limited facilitator availability, we have implemented a policy where 50 participants is the minimum number needed to request a private unit session. If you have less than 50 participants, please plan a time where your team can attend one of our already scheduled Michigan Medicine Open Sessions. No. The process for claiming credit for your profession is separate from the post-training evaluation. Please review the provided steps for your specific profession provided below.

Once you have completed your post training evaluation, you will receive a certificate of completion. You will need this certificate to claim your credit. You can claim CME credit and complete the evaluation from the MiCME website. Log in and claim CME credit within 6 months of the training you attended.  Claimed CME hours will be reflected on your transcript in MiCME. Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to upload your certificate of completion. After upload is complete,  click here to claim your CME credit.

Once you have completed your post training evaluation, you will receive a certificate of completion. To receive your credit you will need to email your certificate to Myles Borders at [email protected]  and follow the instructions they provide to you.
